Every photographer boasts a unique style, characterized by their preference for certain elements such as film stocks, lighting equipment, natural sunlight, etc. This individuality extends to the specific ways they choose to capture a subject. Over time, we develop insights and preferences on how we like to approach various contexts.
For instance, my go-to gear and techniques for outdoor shoots differ from those I use in a studio setting. Similarly, when photographing subjects with dark hair and skin, I have a unique combination of creative choices that differ from those I employ when working with individuals with blonde hair or even pink hair (which was a recent adventure). This diversity makes photography enjoyable and allows for personal expression in various ways, however subtle, with every new photoshoot.
In the video above, you can see me preparing early in the morning on shoot day, loading my vehicle, double-checking that I have the correct diffusion materials, and placing them in the rag bags for the day. Did I end up using all of them? Of course not, but having familiar options on location is always desirable. And, of course, you get a peek at the giant-wheeled case I use for cameras and accessories.
What are your favorite go-to's and preferences in your work, be it photography, modeling, filmmaking, or any other artistic endeavor? Once you recognize your tendencies, challenge yourself to explore new methods and techniques, reimagining familiar tasks differently. Embrace the opportunity to grow and expand your creative horizons. If we ever teamed up on a project, it would be exciting to see and hear how you interpret the world as well.
