Color film photography, or any creative endeavor consciously engaging color, goes beyond being a mere form of artistic expression. It serves as a unique medium, inviting us to navigate our innermost feelings and explore our connection with the surrounding world. This exploration transcends the superficial, embracing the spiritual and metaphysical dimensions of color. Through it, we unveil how these elements intertwine with our photographic journey and our lives.

The Transformative Power of Color

Colors significantly influence our emotions, actions, and mental states. The vibrancy of red may stir feelings of passion or urgency; the tranquillity of blue can soothe our minds; the earthy tones of green ground us. These associations go beyond psychology; they're deeply rooted in our energy and vibrational frequencies. Often, the colors we're drawn to photograph reflect the frequency we're currently resonating with, thereby mirroring our inner emotional landscape.

Color Film Photography: Energy and Frequencies

The organic nature and tangible quality of film photography resonate intuitively and perceptually with its unique rendering of colors. Each color corresponds to a different frequency within the visible light spectrum. This spectrum is a fundamental property of light, with different colors representing different wavelengths, or frequencies, of electromagnetic energy. Blue or violet light, when it's NATURAL and not from electronic screens etc., has a shorter wavelength, hence a higher frequency, and carries more energy. Conversely, red light has a longer wavelength, lower frequency, and carries less energy.

In a metaphysical context, these properties are believed to influence our personal energy or vibrations. The higher frequencies of natural blue or violet light might resonate with our spiritual awareness and intuition, while the lower frequencies of red might resonate with feelings of grounding and physical vitality. Capturing images with these color frequencies can be an act of energy healing, as we align ourselves with the vibrations they emit.

The Spiritual and Metaphysical Resonance of Color

Within the realm of spirituality, colors assume deeper meanings. They're associated with our chakras, the energy centers in our body, and are thought to impact our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. For instance, focusing on violet, the color of the crown chakra, during a photography session, may induce tranquillity and heightened intuition. Similarly, capturing the vibrant red, the color of the root chakra, might evoke feelings of stability and security.

Auras, or the energy fields enveloping every living being, also present themselves in different colors. These colors are believed to mirror a person's emotional state, level of consciousness, and overall health. Historically, interpretations of aura colors vary, but bright, clear colors are generally seen as indicative of positive energy, while muddied colors may suggest energy blockages or emotional difficulties.

Personally, with focused attention, I've found that I can perceive my own aura and sometimes the aura of others, especially when photographing people in suitable contexts. Maybe it's due to my hyper-focus during a photoshoot, but the moment when a part of someone's self-reveals in real time is genuinely magical.

Through our lens, we're not merely capturing colors—we're capturing the energy and tapping into the aura of our surroundings. This perspective can guide our work, encouraging us to consider the concept of capturing the 'aura' of a scene or subject, reflecting its energy through our use of color.

Healing through Colors: Chromotherapy

Color therapy, or chromotherapy, is another metaphysical aspect tied to color. This form of holistic healing uses color and light to balance energy in our bodies. For example, blue is used to calm and reduce stress, while yellow can stimulate mental activity and foster feelings of confidence. Mindfully choosing colors in our photography and other creative projects can influence our own and our viewer's energy and emotional state. Our photography then becomes more than just a creative endeavor; it transforms into an act of energy healing and balance.

Mindfulness, Meditation, and Photography

Photography, particularly film photography, can serve as a profound meditative practice. It demands focus and presence, guiding us toward a state of mindfulness. By concentrating on different colors and their spiritual associations, we deepen our connection with our surroundings and inner selves. This intentional focus can align our energy with the frequencies of the colors we capture, harmonizing our state of being. Importantly, we aren't simply following a checklist aiming towards a fixed outcome; the creative inner world flows outside the rules of consciousness, and all we can do is remain present in the moment to catch the waves of insight or blessings, whichever you prefer to call it.

Colors in Dreams - Subconscious Symbolism

Color carries potent symbolism in our dreams, often as metaphors for our subconscious thoughts and desires. Reflecting the colors that prominently feature in our dreams through our photographs can be a captivating way to explore and manifest our subconscious thoughts. This process might reveal underlying energies or emotions we're being called to address, contributing to our personal growth and spiritual evolution.

I recently wrapped a photoshoot where I attempted to recreate the sensation of a dream, illustrating the powerful way these subconscious symbols can come to life through our work. In a future post, I'll share some of these photos and delve more deeply into the intriguing convergence of dreams and photography.

The Hidden Influence: Metaphysical Practices in Our World Today

While these concepts might seem abstract and mystical to some, it's important to remember that they have deep roots in human civilization and continue to influence our world today. Metaphysical practices have shaped cultures and religions and have been part of the strategies of governments and militaries. Even today, they remain part of our society, often concealed but pervasive, influencing everything from architecture to public relations campaigns. Some people may be skeptical of this hidden aspect of our society or choose to disregard it, but its presence is undeniable. The wealthiest and most powerful individuals and groups often incorporate these or related principles, using them to inspire, guide, or manipulate.

From color symbolism in national flags to the calculated use of colors in marketing, these metaphysical concepts are far from irrelevant. Even on a smaller scale, we see people turning to yoga, meditation, and energy healing for personal growth and well-being, indicative of a broader acceptance and integration of these spiritual practices in our lives.

Upliftment and Inspiration

It's clear that these metaphysical concepts, including the power of color frequencies, are not just fringe ideas; they are integral to our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. They are tools that can be used for personal growth, transformation, and positive change in the world. Or, in the hands of the corrupt and shady, they can be used to mislead and control. As artists, and more importantly, as conscious beings, it's our responsibility to recognize and understand these forces, to use our creative abilities not just to create aesthetically pleasing works but to uplift and inspire.

Intertwining our understanding of color psychology, spiritual symbolism, and energy healing with the use of color can transform our personal world into a unique and spiritual journey of exploration. By capturing the colors of the world, we're essentially capturing the colors of our soul—the frequencies that resonate within us, the energy we emit, and the spiritual growth we're experiencing.

What colors are you currently drawn to in your life, and what emotions do they evoke? Do these colors match the energy you resonate with? As you plan creative projects with the advent of warmer weather, how does your choice of color reflect your inner landscape and frequency?
