What better pairing than a blend of visual art and timeless music that showcases the remarkable connection between film photography and classical compositions. A.I. who? š
As I prepare for some upcoming work in May, I've found inspiration in the sharp eyes of talented street photographers and photojournalists from the past. These skilled and dedicated artists could quickly compose and adjust their film cameras to beautifully capture fleeting moments. Lately, I've been studying the work of Vivian Maier, among others, to learn from their exceptional talent. It's genuinely remarkable how their trained eyes could consistently capture such striking perspectives at just the right moments. While anyone can take a good photo occasionally, the ability to do so consistently and at a high level sets these photographers apart ā their keen vision is like comparing Varsity and J.V. squads. After all, there are levels to everything, right?
In the video above, I share some images from one of Vivian Maier's photobooks, published long after she passed away. If you're unfamiliar with her story, her film negatives were found in a storage locker and sold at auction. Maier was an unknown photographer and only started receiving recognition for her talents years after her work was discovered.
One remarkable aspect of viewing photos by talented photographers is their ability to elicit emotions and reflections within ourselves that we might not think about regularly. Take some of the frames in the video, for example. Most likely, many of those people are no longer with us, but they once walked the same streets we do. They had dreams, goals, and families and were someone's brother or sister. Did they find fulfillment, or did life get the best of them?

In a way, strong images presented as a collection remind us of the brevity and fragility of our time here on Earth. They encourage us to cherish our moments, make the most of our lives, and appreciate the beauty in our surroundings. Photographs like these also serve as a testament to the power of art, its ability to bridge the gaps between different times and cultures, and its capacity to create connections with people from various backgrounds. Most importantly, these images compel us to look inward and reflect on our own journey and growth, reminding us that our inner reality ultimately shapes the world we experience. This introspective connection between art and spirituality is a potent reminder of the profound depth photography, and other art forms can convey.
