What is your personal truth in a portrait?

Writer: Jesse JacquesJesse Jacques

Legendary French actress Jeanne Moreau once gave an interview quoting Jean Cocteau,

describing her iconic film career in the most simple way: “This beautiful lie that tells the truth, that’s creation, that is art”.

The interview was recorded in her later years, decades after we fell in love with her walking the dimly lit streets of Paris, to the sounds of Miles Davis, in Elevator To The Gallows.

Listening to her reflect on characters she played with such passion, with such a poetic perspective, was not only inspiring as a creative, but also confirmed beliefs that I've always held as an artist.

What is real and true will always endure

Whether it’s cinema, photography, or any other artistic endeavor, the pulse that keeps it all moving forward is the ability to capture what is real and true in a moment. It’s an energy we can all relate to in the same way music is able to transcend boundaries. We can’t explain why a collection of sound frequencies can affect us on a deeper level, yet music is tied to a wide spectrum of emotions in our lives. Being connected to that true part of yourself, allowing it to shine through will transform a pretty picture into something much more special.

Trends will come and go

What is mainstream popular now will be forgotten in a week, month or year. That carefully orchestrated Instagram selfie with the perfect filter will get lost in the THREE BILLION social media posts a day, often leaving you chasing perfection that doesn’t exist. But the one constant that will always remain, lying dormant behind the artificial likes and photoshop of the digital age, is your unique inner beauty waiting to be set free.

define your true self

My ultimate goal during a portrait session is to capture that one of one inner glow and define it in a moment. Like Miles Davis improvising with his trumpet to score scenes in Elevator to the Gallows, I take the same approach with clients for a photo shoot. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, and the unique qualities that make you special are where I use my innate abilities to see and create within those fleeting moments.
